Chimney caps’ dampers are used to close off the chimney when it is not in use. A damper is important, especially in modern construction, because the chimney is no longer used as a primary source of heat for homes, and is in fact turned off much of the time during the winter. If the chimney is not home to a fire, it will operate opposite to the intended effect, and act as a conduit for cold air to enter your home.
Installing chimney caps’ dampers when you finish your chimney allows you to seal off the chimney. In addition to dampers found at the cap, other dampers can be installed lower down, near the base of the chimney. The most effective way to create a heat barrier is to have both a bottom and top damper. This is because if you only have a damper on the bottom, and do not have chimney caps’ dampers, snow and debris can still find their way into the chimney, where they will pile up on top of the damper. This makes it much more difficult to clean out the chimney, since the damper cannot be opened if it is buried under a pile of debris.
