Chimney flue caps are designed to do several different things. The first thing that a flue cap does is regulate the air flow to prevent back drafts. A back draft occurs when a gust of wind blows air back into a chimney. They are hazardous to the interior of a home because they can blow smoke and sparks back out into the room, posing a choking and fire hazard.
Chimney flue caps are angled so that when the wind is blowing, it doesn’t come up under the cap. This still allows the hot air from inside the chimney to escape; drawing new air into the fire, but it prevents air from reaching the chimney from the outside. This allows the chimney to function as intended, improving the fire’s fuel economy by continually refreshing the oxygen around the fire.
The second major reason to install chimney flue caps is to prevent other things that live outside from getting into your home. The openings of the caps are usually covered in a fine mesh wire for two reasons. Firstly, the mesh acts as a spark arrestor to prevent sparks from landing on the roof and posing a fire hazard. Secondly, the mesh keeps birds, insects, and other small animals from finding their way into your home via the chimney.
