Not too many people think of a chimney as green or a help to the environment. They are a obvious help to the interior air quality, funneling noxious fumes and smoke outside where it can dissipate freely. They are incredibly important for industrial processes, many of which are decidedly not-green, but chimneys and chimney tops are feeling the effects of climate change just like everyone else and have a few environmentally sound improvements.
While many neighborhoods welcome green energy, these same neighborhoods have restrictions in place that prevent unsightly additions which often include solar panels and wind turbines. It is nice to see a little bit of history being preserved and there are a number of ways to install these systems in a good looking or completely hidden look.
One example of a nearly hidden solar panel is installed on chimney tops which are primarily used to prevent water from entering the chimney opening and hot ash and debris from leaving and landing on the roof. From street level, where homes and buildings are almost always viewed from, the panel is completely invisible. Only from directly above the solar powered chimney tops are the panels visible. Though it may be a relatively small area, it won't conflict with any neighborhood homeowner guidelines or city zoning preferences.
Many communities do not want their rooflines and view inhibited by solar panel arrays, which in the past were very unsightly and often considered ugly. They were black, glossy and reflective which stands out on most roofs, and in many cases they weren't even flush with the roof. They were mounted to gain maximum exposure to the sun to eek out the most power. Today's panels are efficient and inconspicuous. While the glossy black panels are still available and dropping in price, newer panels are designed to blend in with surroundings or be so efficient that only a small area is needed for power absorption.
Solar panels now come in convenient roof tile sizes, colors and shapes so they can effortlessly blend in with almost any home or building, regardless of it's style or history. These roof tile panels are small, interlocking pieces that can be installed onto an entire roof, only onto the sunny side, or only where it is needed. They blend in with the other roof tiles for a seamless and smoothly colored roof that can produce enough power for the entire home.
